These SUVs don’t have the off-road capabilities of true off-roaders like the Mahindra Thar. The Thar is ideal in that aspect but suffers in practicality. To solve this, Mahindra is working on the 5-door Thar. The 5-door Thar could be the perfect family car that you can take off-roading too. In today’s article, let’s talk about this Rs 18 lakh SUV.
Design & interiors
The Thar 5-door has been spotted testing several times. But unlike the Jimny and Gurkha, it is yet to be spotted without camouflage. Contrary to the speculations around, Mahindra is working on a completely new design for the Thar 5-door. Then what about the spy shots? Mahindra could be just testing the platform and engine capabilities. According to our sources, the new Thar 5-door design could be radically different to the three-door Thar. Also, Mahindra could make the interior of the Thar 5-door plusher than the current model.
Specifications
The Thar 5-door is almost certain to be based on the modified ladder-on-frame chassis that also underpins the Scorpio-N. Thar 5-door could miss out on Watt’s link suspension setup present on the Scorpio-N. What about the engine options? It could come with a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine capable of producing 200bhp and 380Nm of torque. Diesel duties will most likely be handled by the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine capable of producing 172bhp and 400Nm of torque. Both engines are expected to come with automatic and manual gearbox options. The Thar 5-door will be tuned better for highway running than off-roading.
18 lakh SUV – Launch timeline
Even though the Thar 5-door is being regularly spotted in testing, it is not the final production version. Mahindra has finalised the exterior design but is now working on the interiors. For now, Mahindra is only testing the components for the Thar 5-door. Considering all this, we don’t expect Mahindra to unveil the car anytime soon. The earliest we can expect is in the second half of 2023.
